Bob Harper’s Inside Out Method: Pure Burn Super Strength

Bob Harper's Inside Out Method: Pure Burn - Super StrengthSo, I loved Loved LOVED Bob Harper’s Body Rev Cardio DVD…the next one up for me was his strength video, with the nice short title, Bob Harper’s Inside Out Method: Pure Burn – Super Strength.

I put it in, and one nice thing I didn’t mention in my last review is there aren’t tons of ads, warnings, or other time wasters when you put the DVD in.  You put it in, there’s a quick “don’t copy this DVD and don’t kill yourself” warning, and then boom…there’s the menu.  A silly little thing, but it’s nice not to have to wait.

As with the other new DVDs, there’s a long (about 60 minutes) and a short (about 30 minutes) workout.  You’ll need some hand weights for this – the ones you use with Shred will probably be fine, although you may want to get a heavier set as well (sometimes you only use one weight).

60 Minute Workout

Bob starts out with a quick talk, introduces his minions (different ones from the cardio DVD), and then gets started with the warmup.  A little leg stuff, some runner’s stretches, a couple of pushups, and it’s time for a set of weights and Bob starts in with weighted squats.

Just like the cardio DVD, there’s a lot of lower body work.  My knees tend to creak and grind, so it was good that one of his people was doing modified versions of the squats and lunges (basically, don’t go down so far).  Then, after your legs are fired up, it’s time to start mixing in the upper body.

One nice thing about this workout is that Bob usually doesn’t isolate a body part.  Yes, there are bicep curls, but he has you go into a shoulder press at the top of the curl.  Then he starts throwing in other moves until he ends up combining down-and-outs (burpees), pushups, bicep curls, and shoulder presses.  And you do a billion of them.

Yes, he may be clinically insane.

But…it’s a heck of a workout.  I absolutely love that his minions are struggling with it, and they look like they’re in great shape.  At one point, when Helen (a minion who’s had 4 kids and there’s no way she had 4 kids because ZOMG she’s a machine) gives him a dirty look, Bob delivers the best line of the DVD (although delivers a lot of good ones) :

“Don’t forget, I’m the nice one, remember?  You love me…you LOVE me!”

BOOM!  Take that, Jillian!

As far as intensity goes, this one is just as hard as Body Rev, but in a different way.  It wasn’t so much the cardio, but my legs were burning.  My upper back was burning.  My shoulders exploded.  My triceps fell off.  Seriously, by the end I was completely failing during tricep extensions, pushups (even modified), abs, walking plank…the weighted T-stands?  Wow.  The combination moves he does keeps things moving so I was sweating like a madman by the end.

20 Minute Workout

Bob starts off by saying that this is the workout beginners should do, and I definitely agree…the hour is too much.  This one is significantly shorter – the 20 minutes includes both the warmup and cooldown, so it’s 45 minutes less!

It’s nice that while it’s similar, this isn’t just a cut down version of the long one.  While he uses the same techniques (upper body to lower body, and repeat), Bob focuses a little more on pointing out correct form.  The moves are a little different than the full workout, without as many combination moves.  It’s nice so you can focus on just getting one thing done correctly.

So yes, the workout is easier because it’s shorter, but Bob is definitely not as intense on this one – if you’re using an appropriate set of weights you’ll feel it no matter how in-shape you are, but there’s not the insanity intensity of the long workout.  Like he said, if you’re a beginner start here.

But I also think that it’s a good workout if you’re really short on time.  You just have to be a little more careful not to phone it in – make sure you pick up some heavy weights because you’ll only be doing it for maybe 15ish minutes.

I find it difficult to compare with Shred because I’ve done Shred so much and this one only a couple of times.  I think this one is probably around the same level of difficulty, and you could possibly make it a bit easier by using less weight.  If it’s a little too hard, use less/no weight.  If it’s too easy, use more.

Conclusion

In case you haven’t noticed, I LOVE THIS DVD and can’t recommend it enough.  The Pure Burn and Body Rev DVDs have now replaced (at least for now) No More Trouble Zones and Banish Fat, Boost Metabolism.  Sorry Jillian, but this is seriously the hardest hour of strength training I’ve ever done…and like Bob says, “you get fit by busting your ass!”

What’s good

  • The workout is nonstop.  I really felt like I was getting my money and time’s worth.
  • The helpers are obviously really struggling and working like maniacs.  It’s very inspiring.
  • Bob, once again, has a fantastic rapport with his helpers.  At one point I was a little jealous that they were getting to interact directly with him!  I was also short on oxygen.
  • Bob talks a lot about both form and what you should mentally be focusing on.  It sounds dumb, but it’s easy to zone out and get distracted.
  • The short workout is effective if you don’t have the full hour, and is better for beginners (although it’s still really hard).

What you might not like

  • There’s nothing between the 20 minute and 60 minute workouts, and I wouldn’t have minded something in the middle.  (this will be where No More Trouble Zones comes in for me)
  • The guy in the video, despite being in great shape, takes quite a few breaks and I couldn’t tell if he was always putting in 100%.  The two women make up for it because they’re working crazy hard.
  • The long workout may be a bit much for beginners.
  • It could use 2 or 3 times the amount of stretching at the end.

Next up?  Bob Harper’s Yoga for the Warrior.

Goodness I can’t wait to get them in the mail!!!

Where did you order these? I tried My Tainer Bob website but it wouldn’t give me access to it when I finished the checkout process. I was logged in.

Is there another place to buy these? Thanks!

I tried to order from the site last night and this morning and I got as far as the checkout and was given a “Access Denied 403″ code. I had logged in and have written to them, but not gotten any response. I tried to pay by credit card and PayPal and no luck. I don’t know what else to try. Target doesn’t seem to carry them yet. I got so frustrated, I decided to ask on here, hoping there was another place to order them. Thanks for writing back!

I don’t know. I got them from mytrainerbobdvd.com – ordered on June 30. I think they’re only available from him – not from an outside source.

Sorry I can’t be of more help. :(

          • runr on July 9, 2010 at 8:00 am

No problem. Thank you for your help and I will keep trying. Maybe I will hear from them or ask someone else to try ordering them for me. I need something new; it’s getting too hot for my long trailruns.
            Thanks again.

I ordered them straight from mytrainerbobdvd.com too…and the checkout process was hokey at best. I entered all my info, credit card, etc., and then got a blank page after clicking “Confirm” or whatever. I didn’t get a confirmation email for days, but they did charge my credit card. Then all the shipping emails I got were blank too. Just a subject saying something like “shipping status”, but there was no body to the email.

Hopefully they get back to you soon!

          • runr on July 9, 2010 at 8:42 am

Bill, Thanks for letting me know you had problems too. Let’s hope that they didn’t receive all my attempts at ordering or I will have several packages of the series of DVD’s, not to mention what it would do to my bank account. I will hope to hear from them soon. It’s frustrating when you want something NOW…

I LOVE that there isn’t all that crap at the beginning, like in the Shred. Nothing like putting the DVD in, doing 30 minutes worth of other stuff and then coming back to work out. If you come back at all… All the more reason to buy this!

    • Beth on July 9, 2010 at 7:41 am

I either go straight to the menu or just scene forward through all of that. Nothing says you have to let it play. :)

    i just did this workout:
    http://www.dailymile.com/people/nicurnmama/entries/2376059
whoo-whee it was hard but good. i was afraid that i couldn’t keep up but i did. i did have to make a few modifications with my healing hip/groin injury but this was a great workout and well deserved punishment for my excessive indulgence over the last 4 days.
i can’t wait to try out the rest of the series.
i agree about Francisco. he just didn’t seem to be working as hard as the rest of the minions and Bob. he wasn’t even the best eye candy, not that you would be noticing, Bill.
    great reviews so far, Bill!

“Weighted T-stands”??? That sounds like the evil older brother of Rolling Ts from Yoga Meltdown (and I already think Rolling Ts are evil, so…). Am I close?

  11. Bill on July 8, 2010 at 6:29 pm

I haven’t done yoga meltdown in a while, but these must be worse. Go into plank on your weights. Do a pushup, back to plank. Now do a t-stand (with the weight). Back to plank. Pushup. T-stand on the other side. Keep going. GO GO GO! LOL

    • Beth on July 8, 2010 at 6:31 pm

Yep. They’re the evil older brother. Oh fun! :)

Got my DVD set in the mail today. I’ll gradually start working them in. I think.

I hope the folks who had trouble ordering see this post: Do not push the Pay Pal button at the start. Go through the order process first and then you’ll have another chance to push Pay Pal. If you’ve already had trouble with using the Pay Pal button early, you will have to clear all of your cookies before the method will work.

This problem was discussed on videofitness.com. A poster there figured out how to make the order process work, and I informed Customer Service. Customer Service replied to thank videofitness for letting them know about the problem and its back door solution. They came back later to say that they had not been able to fix the problem, but the SKIP THE FIRST PAY PAL BUTTON process was working fine.

Several people feared that they might have ordered several copies while going through the messed up process; they didn’t.

Love this blog by the way. You guys are very entertaining writers and the entire site is quite interesting.
