How Do You Define Diet and Fitness Success?
Yesterday’s post by Bill got me thinking about all the small things that I do, we all do, on a daily basis and then completely discount them. We’ll make a smart decision about food or we’ll park farther away from the door and hoof it in. We’ll make the effort to go to the gym or we’ll do some little thing to make us healthier and then we’ll completely disregard everything we did with one small act.
Our smart food choice is canceled out by a piece of chocolate. We circle the parking lot for 5 minutes at the next errand so we can get a parking spot closest to the door. We’ll get to the gym but then phone it in and not work as hard as we are able. We’ll take that one “bad” thing and make it the one thing we focus on. It’s as though we haven’t done anything right all day.
I’ve been beating myself up for not working out the way I know I can. The way I wish I was. But not working out doesn’t mean I haven’t had small victories, little successes that make up my day. I’ve been buying and eating a ton of fruits and veggies. I’ve been trying to cook more at home, cooking healthier foods and laying off the calorie heavy choices. I’ve ordered Bob Harpers’s Inside Out Methods because while I’m fairly certain I can’t do the long workouts (without some modifications), I can do the short ones. And, I can definitely have the DVD’s queued up for my post-baby workouts in the fall. I’m going to start keeping my workout clothes next to the DVD player for all those mornings where I’m up at 5:30/6 (of which there are way too many).
Don’t discount the small successes, especially on those bad days. Even little victories make a big difference.

Thanks Karen! We need to remember that.

Kudos to you for keeping up with ANY exercise while pregnant!
If we don’t celebrate the small successes, it’s too easy to cancel them out. It’s OK to take pride in our smart choices – doing that improves attitude and makes it easier to make more smart choices and harder to make the less-than-stellar ones!
Congratulations!!
