Caffeine Free

Well, I’ve done it again…I got to thinking about it after writing about drinking water and I’ve kicked the diet soda habit.  Now some of you may recall that I’ve done something like this before, but this time I have some decent substitutes in place.  And I’m not cutting back, I’m going cold turkey.  Eventually I’d like to get away from any artificial sweeteners in my drinks, but trading Diet Mountain Dew for flavored seltzer water is a good start.  You might argue that it’s pretty similar to diet soda, but at least it’s a step.  At the very least I’m cutting back on sodium and caffeine.

What’s interesting is that I’m noticing the same thing I did before – I’m dreaming again.  When I drink diet soda (and I wasn’t just drinking a little), I don’t dream.  Or perhaps I don’t remember my dreams, but it doesn’t matter.  Now that I’m off of it, I’m remembering dreams again.  And you know what?

My brain is a weird place at night.

It fascinated me before, and it fascinates me now.  Getting my dreams back has to be healthy, right?  Maybe it’s something chemical, or maybe I’m just getting better sleep.  I’m also noticing that I’m getting tired when it gets dark.  Huh.  Who knew?

The only down side is that I’m also feeling more tired during my workouts.  Oh well, it’s all relative, right?

I kicked my diet coke habit in January. It was a rough first couple days, but very rarely do I miss it now. I didn’t really notice the dream thing though.

Great job Bill!! As someone who just went through cutting out coffee and diet sodas I feel your pain. I cut out all artificial (and natural) sweeteners too. After the first 4 -5 days I felt so amazing. I have all this energy that I never have had before – I feel like a little kid! ;)
