October SHRED #10: Snack Tip – Apples
Apples are a great snack…not just because I say so, but because my mom says so. And your mom says so. Heck, all moms say so, and you wouldn’t want to disappoint all the moms out there, would you?
Seriously, you know and I know that apples are good for you. They’re natural, they have fiber, vitamins, blah blah blah. Do I really need to go through this?
Of course, you can just grab an apple but that doesn’t always do it for me. Sometimes, particularly as the weather cools down, it’s nice to play around with adding seasonings to your apple to make it more exciting.
One thing I do when it’s cooler out (except it’s going to be 80 here today, on October 12…WTF???) is thinly slice the apple, mix it up with a little cinnamon (and some sweetener or a tiny bit of sugar if it’s not a very sweet apple) and microwave it all, covered, for anywhere from a couple to several minutes. Sorry to be so vague, but it depends on how crisp you like your apple, and how good your microwave is. My microwave is more like a slow cooker, so I can’t really recommend a time. :(
You can also play around by adding a little plain oatmeal to the mix, along with a bit of water. Of course, that adds calories so you need to count them, but overall it’s still a healthy snack. Wheat germ is something else that can add a lot of fiber to help make the apple keep you full longer.
What do you do with your apples to make them interesting? How about pumpkin pie spice?

Chili powder, and lemon juice. Delicious
I buy those little individual packs of caramel for dipping. It’s a nice sweet snack in the evening. I think the caramel packs are something like 130 calories, and I usually don’t quite eat all the caramel in it, so it’s not too bad for a treat!
I slice up my apple and spread creamy almond butter on several of the slices – really good!
A great dipping sauce for apples is some vanilla yogurt with a little bit of cinnamon mixed in. I also like apples with peanut butter if I need something really filling.
just recently found this blog (love it) and was reading through and found this post–which prompted me to try something new for breakfast and it turned out so good, I thought I’d share…
1 c. chopped up skinless granny smith apple
1 container Plain Greek Yogurt (I used Yoplait cause that’s all our store carries)
1 Tbsp. Natural Peanut Butter
1 packet Tru-Via
Dash of Cinnammon
Completely satisfying and even really yummy and it was only 263 calories!
