October SHRED #14: Find Your Balance

Balance by SeeMidTN.com (aka Brent), on FlickrSomething that really helps me from going crazy (eating-wise, that is) is finding the right balance of protein, fruits, vegetables, starches, dairy, etc.  I find that when I am seriously lacking in one of those groups (like if I don’t eat any dairy for a while) I end up overcompensating with something else…usually the sugar food group.

What, you didn’t know that was a food group?  Um, well…

Anyway, you want to make sure you get enough of the different types of food at the correct time of day.  Some people can get away with cereal for breakfast, but I find I do better getting my protein in early so I eat eggs and bacon (fake!) for breakfast.  Maybe you need yours at lunch, or at dinner.  Or maybe you’re eating too much protein, and need to dial it back in favor of something else.

It’s different for everyone, so you need to experiment a little.

But if you find yourself getting hungry throughout the day, pay attention to what you’re eating and see if you’re shorting yourself on something.  Change things up, and you might find yourself feeling fuller for longer after each meal.

How about you?  Have you noticed that you do better when you eat certain things during the day?

I need to have a breakfast that can fill me up for a few hours..I just can’t eat eggs first thing in the morning..I’m such a carb addict that I need my carbs ( whole grain bread or cereal etc)..I wish I can enjoy oatmeal , I know it can satisfy someone’s hunger for hours..( I’m not an oatmeal fan but I keep trying and wasting it).

Yes. I absolutely need to have a good mix of carbs and proteins at breakfast. If I eat just carbs I’m starving within 2 hours and there usually goes the rest of my day. Also throughout the day I try to keep that balance. I also eat ever 2-3 hours so I don’t get too hungry.

I’m starting to learn this, and yes it’s key. I need protein at breakfast too–or at least something that is hearty like oatmeal. I need to eat a decent amount in the first half of the day and I don’t need so much in the evening. The problem is that I like to eat in the evening!

I like Kashi Go Lean Crunch. The regular Go Lean tastes like cardboard, but the Crunch variety is fantastic. It has more protein than any of the other healthy cereals I’ve found and satisfies the need for something crunchy. Works great as a snack, too.
