October SHRED #9: Shop Along the Perimeter

October 11, 2010

The next time you go grocery shopping, take a look at where most of the fresh, healthy food is.  Along the perimeter of the store, right?  If your store is like most others, that’s where the produce, fresh meats (and meatless substitutes, heh), dairy, and fresh baked goods are.  And what’s on the inside aisles?

Processed stuff.  Junk foods and snacks.  Soda.

Now, of course there are healthy foods throughout the store, things you need as parts of recipes, and stuff like that.  And nobody expects you to be PERFECT in your diet, so don’t feel guilty about getting things from off the shelves, but overall you want to get as much of your food from the edges as you can.

You’ll find that sticking with the fresher foods will not only be better for you, but you might just end up liking the flavor better after a while (it does take a while to get used to the flavor of “real food” if you’re used to eating highly processed food…the sodium makes you think you’re tasting something you aren’t)
