Bill’s New Year Goals
I hate New Year’s resolutions. It’s so easy to pick something unrealistic, which leads to disappointment when they fall through.
That said, I’ve set a couple of goals (not resolutions) for myself. Following on the heels of my “eliminate Diet Mountain Dew” success (it’s been a long time since I’ve even had one, and I’ve only had a couple of caffeinated drinks in the last few months), my first goal is to drink fewer artificial sweeteners. I noticed I was still drinking TONS of them, in flavored soda water, in Crystal Light, in sweetened tea, wherever. So for the past few days I’ve been limiting myself to one artificially sweetened drink a day. It’s not realistic for me to completely cut myself off (yet), but if I can limit the damage I’ll be happy.
The second goal I have is to finish my first marathon. I know, I know, after last year’s half marathon I said I had no desire to do a full marathon. But during the fall I started bumping up my milage and realized I could either try to beat my half marathon time, or do a full marathon. I felt like I was going to injure myself by pushing for speed at that distance, so I decided to sign up for a marathon.
I have a time goal for it, but it’s not public because my main focus is on finishing it. Uninjured. Anything beyond that is a bonus.
So what are your goals for the year? We’d love for you to share them with us!

Bill, you rock! I’m so impressed that you’re training for a marathon. Here’s to hoping the course is nice and flat.
My fitness goals/plans for the year are all in effect after the baby is born and I’m cleared to exercise again, hopefully by mid-April. I’m sure I will become reacquainted with Jillian, but I also want to re-do Couch-to-5K as soon as I’m able, and then work up to my first 10k. I’m hoping to run the Tufts 10K for Women over Columbus Day weekend.
Oh, I am with you on the artificial sweeteners! I am slowly weaning myself off the diet soda, but I still use sweeteners in other stuff (oatmeal, sugar-free jelly, etc).
My big goal is to really train for my 3rd half and focus on an actual time goal. I want to crack 2:30 which isn’t super speedy, but would be great for me. Last year for my first half I just wanted to finish, and half #2 was kind of a blur (I did run it slightly faster, but not by much).
My other thing is being more accountable, via the Twitter group, this site, and also documenting progress more regularly on my own sad neglected blog.
Yay Bill! I’m about to do my first run in a couple of weeks. Let’s just say I’m way behind, but hoping to literally and figuratively get my butt in gear!
Yay!
Lets go marathon! if i did it, so can you! you’re tougher too!!
I just started with 30 days shred again. wow, i swear I’ve got that push-ups to work on and this core.. whew!
Kas
i am so excited for you for the marathon. your commitment to it is one of the things that pokes me along with my own commitment to running.
Excellent goal – you’ll crush it!
I’m hoping to sign up for another 1/2 Marathon and come in closer to 2:00 (and maybe even below?!?). Last year it was crazy hot on race day so I’m hoping the weather cooperates this year.
