One week, one pound

July 8, 2011
By Bill

It’s been a week, and other than July 4th, I’ve been really good about my eating.  Only fruit for snacks, measuring during meals, and no sweets at all.  And my reward?

One pound lost.

My brain knows that’s good, but my heart feels like, “man, I worked out and ate perfectly, how come I didn’t lose more?”  Shows like The Biggest Loser have turned a one pound success into something that’s kind of disappointing.  One pound should be celebrated, because it’s a healthy loss and I’m not feeling deprived while doing it.  But you get this expectation that every week should be big numbers and bleah.

Anyway, I know this is all part of the journey.  I’m mostly just happy to have caught it while it’s only 10 pounds to lose instead of waiting until it was 50 pounds like last time.  Or 115 pounds the time before that.

Have a great weekend, Shredheads!  Next week I’ll be talking about my weird toe shoes and aqua jogging!

Shows like Biggest Loser are meant to inspire. The people on the shows have 75-150lbs or more to lose. It’s a lot harder to lose 10lbs while working, keeping up with family and eating on a budget. I’ve been working on 5lbs for 3months. (I had my 2nd son April 3rd by c-section.) The recovery has been harder then I expected. I’m thankful only to have 5lbs of baby weight BUT would like to lose total of 15lbs.

You should jump for joy you lost a pound. That’s awesome…every week it will get better, not easier, watching what you eat. It’s my biggest challenge these days. Your reward is one pound and feeling better about yourself! You’re doing great.

I come to this site to see other ppl working though the same struggles I face. I was planning to start 30day Shred last week when I hurt my back. I have to start back…we should all do 30day and come here to post how each day is going!

  2. Teresa on July 12, 2011 at 10:55 am

Okay…I started yesterday! It was hard and I can feel it in my arms this morning. I’m 165lbs with a goal of 8lbs for the 30days. It may be a little hard to get there with nursing but going to try. I’m still getting up in the middle of the night with our 3 1/2month old. I’m hoping this will get me more energy too. My sis started back today. She’s 184.

Anyone else want to join us? It’s not like your last name is posted! :)

      Yay, and welcome! :)

So lets be honest here…I’ve been doing Shred for 9days. It’s not getting any easier and my endurance is better. I still feel out of breath for some parts and don’t understand how to do a proper crunch. My neck still feels like it’s invited to the party! Tomorrow is day 10 – weight in for me and last day of level one.

down 1/2 lb, i guess better then nothing.

Hey there! I started the shred I think 15 days ago, I skipped a day here and there (I think 2) but have been going straight at it recently. I sometimes I even do a level 3 and then level 2 workout later in the day and haven’t lost a thing :(
After finding this site I decided a few days ago to take before pics (I know I should have done it earlier, but my mommy brain got in the way LOL). I am hoping to see a difference in the next 2 weeks or I am going to be upset! It seems I just can’t lose this baby weight for the life of me. My twins will be 2 next month and I am still trying to get rid of 17 lbs!! I am currently at 175 and all I wanted was to get down to 158 (pre prego weight) prior to my 30th bday (Aug. 17th). I’ve struggled with my weight for what seems like me whole life and was determined I would hit 30 feeling happy with myself and now it doesn’t look like it will happen.
I was doing really well and had gotten down to 163-165 (depending on the day) with Jillian’s bourne ultimatum but then I plateaued for months. In March my heart started skipping beats like crazy, scared me a little and I stopped working out, for the next few months while I underwent testing I quit working out, (I was scared I would have a heart attack) HUGE MISTAKE as that is how I gained 10 lbs back :(
I am determined to get back there, hence 2 workouts a day. It’s upsetting, but since finding this site and seeing other people’s results I feel I can do it :) From my research I have noticed a lot of results happen in the last 2 weeks and there isn’t always a lot of weight loss but inches lost, so I am hoping when I go to take those pics 2 weeks from now even if there isn’t a significant number change, I will see a difference in my pics.
    Good luck everyone :)

It’s so easy to get discouraged. Don’t beat yourself up when you have a bad day or week…just take then next opportune to do better.
I hurt my back packing a bag for my 3 ½ yr old and I’m 31! I really like the Shred. I lost 5lbs the 1st 30days then got preg w/our 2nd son. I was down to 152.5 so I have a little way to get there too. Just know you got down to 163 so you can do it again.
I’ve started a new approach with eating 1st and working out. It’s hard to get time to workout with 2kids plus I’m nursing our 3.5month old. It takes time to lose and keep the weight off. I know you have a goal in mind. Don’t focus on you will be 30. Don’t look at what you haven’t accomplished but what you have. Don’t let the scale dictate your happy place. That can cause really set backs, so put the scale away. Only weight in 1x a week, I do it every 10days. Good Luck too!

        Teresa,
These are kind words and it’s nice to hear them and know I am not alone. Sometimes it feels like I am the only one. Great advice, I went to get on the scale today and reconsidered. I am going to do my best to do weigh in once a week. Thanks again for your support.

  6. Teresa on July 23, 2011 at 2:10 pm

Oh don’t eat after your twins…if you hit up chick fil a get the grilled chicken salad w/lit dressing. There are always healthy chooses and have a guilt free meal once a week. (not day) heehee

This is also a reminder for me too!!

  7. Phina on July 28, 2011 at 8:10 pm

Hello Everyone. I just recently had my 2nd daughter-she’s 8 weeks on Tuesday. My goal is to lose about 10-15lbs. Surprisingly, this pregnancy, I didn’t gain much weight. I only gained 15lbs. However, at the start of my pregnancy, I was overweight (as they say). I’m 4′10″-and I weighed 161. Currently, I am 147-I believe most of the weight came off due to me breastfeeding my daughter and kinda being mindful of what I eat. I found this blog and instantly I fell in love. I love that here I can find people who struggle with the same issues as I am. I find everyone to be very supportive and informative and I’m totally looking forward to hearing from you all. Today was my day 1 of the shred/level 1. It wasn’t so bad…My question is-how often should I weigh myself because I know if I do it too, too often and not see the numbers drop, I might get discouraged? What do you all think?

    • Lynda on July 29, 2011 at 10:49 am

      Phina,
Welcome, I just recently found this site as well, and I cannot lie I am addicted to it and find myself spending a lot of time here reading everybody’s comments and articles, it’s really inspiring. As for the scale I would say once a week, but this is coming from someone who can’t manage to stay off of it several times a day. That being said when I found this site just over a week ago, it inspired me to take before pictures (late though as I was already about 15 days into the shred). Regardless I took another set of photos this week (wed) and there is already a difference, yet the scale says I have remained the same. I know it’s hard not to get discouraged by the scale TRUST ME I know. But take some before pics and in no time you should see results. Also I just joined yesterday fitnesspal.com (free) and there are some pretty good reviews on there re: the site. Great for counting calories. Good luck!! I am in love with the 30 day shred and have started to try and do level 3 and level 2 right after. Next will be Jillian’s other Fit in 30 I think it’s called. :)

    • Teresa on July 29, 2011 at 11:37 am

      Phina,
Congrats on your sweet baby girl! 8wks and getting back on track it awesome. I took a mommy fit class to kick it my butt in gear. It was awesome but price. $10 -45mins at the park, I would like to stick to it but it’s so hot for my son.

I check my weight every few days but chart it every 10days when I switch to the next level. You weight can fluctuate from day to day so don’t let the scare define you. Good luck!

  8. Teresa on July 29, 2011 at 11:41 am

    Phina & Lynda,
I’m so thankful yall are posting here too. It’s great to have a check point and see other ppls progress and MOMs too. I find a lot of weight lost site where they don’t have kids or BF. I think it’s challenging to get enough cals to keep production up.

Tomorrow is day 20 for me but I weighted in today….down 1lb total of 1.5lbs in 20days but big change in how my pants are fitting.

Thanks for mentioning Ripped in 30…that is a 4wk dvd when you start a new level every 7days. I may see about combing it for a full hr workout!
    T*

  9. Phina on July 29, 2011 at 12:59 pm

    Hey Ladies,
So…I just finished my 2nd day-OMG. My legs are sooooo sore. I woke up this morning and almost fell out of the bed. LOL. I guess it’s a good feeling though. I worked areas I didn’t know existed until now. I find it so funny that I’ve had this DVD for more than a year-and I’m JUST now doing it. *hanging head low* For me, getting started isn’t the hard part. It’s the discipline to keep going and doing it everyday. I feel like before I wasn’t held accountable for anything. And now, talking to you all and sort of “reporting” to everyone my results and progress-its a sense of accountability. I did take photos w/ my cell phone. They made me laugh because even then, I found myself sucking in my stomach fat (LOL)…I guess I’m so used to doing that in front of a camera. So, I was able to get some “honest” ones eventually.
After reading everyone’s responses about the scale…I stepped on mine again *hanging head low again* lol…I think I’m addicted to a number. Why so? I know my weight fluctuates but why do I put myself through that? Ughhh frustrating. I just got back from vacation, and It seemed I gained a pound once I returned and I flipped! lol Anywho…
How long did each of you stay in a lever before moving on to the next? I know it sorta depends on the person-I’m just curious. Teresa-so, congrats on your body transformation. I know its such a great feeling fitting into jeans differently. It’s amazing how something so little can give such great confidence. I can’t wait to feel the same. I have my “I can’t wait to get into these…and button them up” jeans on standby. :)
When did you all start to see changes in your bodies?

    • Teresa on July 29, 2011 at 2:49 pm

I’m doing it a little different then Lynda. I’m doing 10days each level and weight in then (if I can wait). When I start to think it’s getting to easy I get the next size hand weights.
I saw the difference w/in 10days. It’s really inches if you can get someone to measure you. I changed how I was eating and it helps. BUT I have to take it easy with nursing too. ***don’t over do it b/c it can make your supply go down if you are strictly BF** I really try not to focus on the scale numbers and getting into pre-prego jeans felt awesome! This week I got into some other work pants too. It’s so nice to get to wear other clothes and you’re your fat or baby clothes. I’ve already had ppl say I’m starting to look different. I could be a spokes person…j/k I still have a long way to go.

Oh I really like that other ppl are reading this. It also makes me feel accountable. I don’t want to have to say I skipped a day. I’m on day 19 and will workout before I get my boys from daycare. It’s a challenge to get it all done.

      • Lynda on July 29, 2011 at 4:00 pm

I meant to say below as well, that I like your idea of upping the weights. I need to get some heavier ones. How did you gradually switch your weights and what are you using now?

        • Teresa on July 29, 2011 at 4:44 pm

I have NO upper body strength so I go between 2s and 5s. I would like to next get some 8s but that maybe pushing it.
It’s weird that I can pickup my 13lbs son all day but 14# weights are murder. Haha

  10. Lynda on July 29, 2011 at 3:41 pm

    Phina
I cannot lie I am little happy to hear you’re sore (in a nice way). When I read that you had finished level 1 no problems I thought WOW that’s amazing. Truth is when I did level 1, I could barely walk for 3 days!!! LOL!

As for sticking to it, perhaps we can make a pact ladies, and one is feeling down or what not we can help to motivate each other, although I suppose that’s the purpose of this site isn’t it?!?! You’re not alone with the scale as I said before I get on it every single day, at least 3 times a day although I have started to stop myself a little more everyday. I see a big difference and so does my hubby (although I don’t think he would tell me different) in the last week and that has helped me to stay off the scale and not care what the scale says. For the first time in months I actually have a little swing in my step.

I would say it was probably about a week for me before I noticed any changes and at first they were slight, mainly in my arms. I now wish I would have taken pictures at the beginning of the work out.

    Teresa,
I haven’t tried Ripped in 30, but I want too. I am really impatient and actually only did level 1 for 6 days, level 2 for 4 days and have been doing level 3 for 12 days. I’ve started doing level 2 right after level 3 and am yet to make it through it all although I almost did today :)

As well I know all about trying to make time for it. I have twins (they’ll be 2 in August), I do freelance writing, I’m trying to get an online business started which now that I am connecting with all these Mommies I will be sure to share the site when it’s up. Oh and I am about to start delivering papers at night for extra money. Wait I forgot to mention, I do all this while my hubby is at work from 7 am – 9 pm 5 days a week. It’s hard but so worth it. I feel better when I work out I have more energy and everything.

I am sure you must be careful when breastfeeding. I breastfed for 6 weeks but ended up back in the hospital for 6 days and with all the pain meds and antibiotics I didn’t feel comfortable giving the milk to the twins, especially considering once discharged I was still on meds for awhile. I felt like a cow though in 6 weeks on top of feeding the twins I had 40 oz. frozen. Crazy!!!

Congrats by the way on fitting into those pants!!! YAY!!! It is truly a great feeling. And hey I think just doing the shred should award everyone a high five it’s hard!!

This is great ladies, I thought I was addicted to the site before, now I’ll be on here a lot more too!!

  11. Teresa on July 29, 2011 at 4:54 pm

I’m really glad yall are digging our little chats…I was starting to feel a little starkish posting the 1st few day w/o anyone responding. I was just going to use this to hold myself accountable.

    So let’s do a little Q&A w/o over sharing:

    Hi I’m Teresa
    I’m 31
    Married for almost 7yrs
    I have two boys: 3 1/2yr old and 3 1/2month old
I’ve never been thin but just over weight…you know the kind when you go to the store and your size is always sold out!

    Started Shred
    7/11 165
    7/20 164.5
    7/29 163.5
Goal is 150 by my birthday in November which is 13.5lbs. (about 4months)

    • Phina on July 29, 2011 at 8:43 pm

Purchased Shred over a year ago :-/
Actually started Shred yesterday, 7/28, 147lbs
My goal is to be between 130-135 by tomorrow-haha. Jk, My birthday, 10/31.

I am 27, and I just recently had my 2nd daughter. I have a 2 year old who is about to be 3 in October, and I have my newest baby, who will be 8 weeks on Tuesday. I too have never been “skinny” per say-however, being involved in dance and other sports in the past, I’ve always managed to stay “fit” or in shape…that’s until I got married and started playing house :) I’ve been married 4 years in December-however, my husband is my bestfriend/high school sweetheart and we’ve been dating since my freshman yr in highschool (1998). I live in Maryland and I plan to go back to work in September. I work for the fed govt. Hopefully, I’ll be able to find a routine to work for me working full time.

      • Lynda on July 30, 2011 at 11:42 am

I think this is fantastic too! A support group is just what I need. Oh and Teresa, I priced out the 5 lb weights at wal-mart last night. I think they will make a considerable difference when I finish the shred in 8 days and then I step up to them. I am currently using 2.5 lbs. I am thinking I will re-do the 30 day shred again with the 5 lb and then move onto Ripped in 30.

I bought the Shred roughly 22 days ago and started right away.
I am 29 years old with my 30th literally just around the corner (August 17th).
I am currently 175 lbs and would love to be 150 lbs by my birthday, however I am realistic and know it will be much longer, xmas perhaps?
I have never been thin either and about the same as Teresa, although I would kill to be the size I was in high school when I thought I was “fat.”
My ultimate goal is to ditch the “fat girl” image I have accumulated from years of emotional abuse from a horrible ex and I know with this I will be able to do it. In 22 days I already have a swing in my step.
I have been married to my hubby/best friend for 3 years.
We have a both a boy and girl (twins) they will be 2 years old next month as well.
I live in Canada and as mentioned before have way to much on my plate. Stay-at-home Mom, freelance writer, entrepreneur (in the making), soon to be paper carrier and a shredhead!
We can do it ladies!!! If you give me your email addresses I can email you the before and after pics I have taken thus far to give you guys a rough idea of the changes. I am yet to lose weight with the shred, but feel changes as well.
Talk to you all soon :)

  12. Teresa on July 30, 2011 at 2:10 pm

Alright guys!!! I bought ripped in 30 today!! I’m going to start right after I finish 30day Shred. (I have 10days left) My co-working is also burning the other 2 Jillian videos for me. I’m going to try here and there to do 2 a day. (It will be hard to find the time.)
We all have realistic goal and nice time lines before the end of the year. I think the way the dvds are set up it will help not to get burnt out or over tired. I see the new us for Christmas & New Years!
As for pictures…I’m too afraid to do it. I also don’t know how to share our email address w/o posting for the world to see?!?!

Oh I’m 5’5” and my hub & I both work full time in New Orleans. **lately my hub has been working overtime which is great but leave more for me too do. **

    Lynda ~ Happy Early 30th Birthday ~
Phina ~ remind me about your birthday later
    I will forget. LOL

    • Lynda on July 30, 2011 at 3:16 pm

      Teresa,
Thank you so much for the early well-wishes. Not looking forward to bidding farewell to my 20’s, but I am looking forward to a fresh start in my 30’s! I agree, I think we have achievable goals and with the support from each other we should be able to do it. It’s nice to find some people who I feel relate to me :)
Please let me know how Ripped in 30 is. I am pretty sure I am getting it for my bday and therefore I cannot chance purchasing it prior to the 17th, but I am going to step up my weights after the following 8 days.
I am 5′3″ sometimes I put another 1/2″ in there to make me feel a little taller LOL!
As for pics, don’t be nervous :) I was too, but reflecting on the change has made me feel great! I also did measurements yesterday so we’ll have to see how I make out with them.
I was thinking re: email addresses, I agree I don’t want to flooded with junk mail or share my personal email on here either that being said 2against1.twins@gmail.com is my blog (which I haven’t worked on in a long time) email address. If you ladies want to send me a line and I will reply with my personal email account, then we can all stay in touch that way as well.
Just be sure to put shredheads in the subject so I know who you are :)
Off to do level 3 and hopefully make it through level 2 right after as well :)
      Talk soon,

  13. Phina on July 30, 2011 at 6:05 pm

Hey there. I sent Lynda the email-so I guess I’ll wait to hear back from you all. Today, I have such a busy day. I didn’t get to do my workout this am…and I’m not certain I’ll be able to pull it off tonight because my hubby and I are going to a birthday party. ugh. It’s been on my mind all day. Right now, I’m at my Mother in-laws house on the computer and I wish I had some workout clothes or a place to do the shred. I guess it’s okay to miss a day here or there. Tomorrow-def back at it though. Or maybe when I get home depending on how late it is. :-/
Are any of you on Facebook?

  14. Teresa on July 31, 2011 at 11:43 am

Happy Sunday!! (going to mix it up with a little morning over view into my life)
I got up this morning at 5:55 to nurse my little guy then when straight to the Shred! I start with lemon water while I workout. After off to make breakfast for the boys…links & biscuits. I had a 1/4biscuit, 1link & slice of egg beater quiche. We’ve played with the boys all morning and about to start prepping lunch @11. We’re grilling chicken, sausage, pork chops, tomato, red & green peppers, onions…serve with salad & wheat grilled bread. We have a friend coming over too which will watch The Box after. I’m sure I will snack on gram crackers w/peanut butter for my afternoon snack. Leftover bbq for dinner then a skin cow ice cream before putting the boys down for 8. What’s a day in your life look like?

    Lynda,
Don’t be scared of your 30s. I was excited to enter my 30s w/my hub & son on my side. I just focus on all the good stuff…everyone in good health, (at the time) the idea of another baby, bad but playful dog, cute house, job I like… 30 is just another number just like the scale. Can’t let it dictate how your feel about yourself. :) (yes a little cheesy but it helps me from being overly hard on myself.)

    Phina,
I have a hard time too if I don’t do it 1st thing. I think about it all day and dread it at night. I haven’t skipped a day but don’t be hard on yourself. You have a 6wk old and life. I just REALLY wanted to lose all the baby weight before a friend came in town in 2wks. It was a mini goal for me. Oh not on facebook but I did email a picture from a few weeks back. Still need to take some in workout clothes.

Ripped in 30 – preview! So I just cruised the dvd weeks. It’s set up just like 30day but she doesn’t display when moving from 3-2-1. There are a lot of the same moves taken up a notch with less jumping. Looks hard b/c a lot of upper body but I could be wrong. I have to say I was a little nervous watching it. I hope my last 9days of Shred prepare me for Ripped.

  15. Teresa on August 4, 2011 at 10:00 am

Day 25! Level 3 is killer for me…esp the abs. Still having a hard time but just going to push it till day 30. I’m excited to see what I weight on Tuesday. I don’t think it will be much difference but this morning I was able to fit into another skirt! I love getting my pre-baby clothes back on. :)

    • Lynda on August 4, 2011 at 10:43 am

      Teresa,
Congrats!! There’s nothing better than fitting into your old clothes, except maybe buying new clothes :)
For me, jump rope & squat jumps is something I still cannot do, my knees feel like they’re breaking every time I attempt it. I don’t think there’s much I can do about that though, my knees have been bothering me since I started the workout but with the results you get I cannot quit. My hubby mentioned knee things, maybe tensor bandage type things. Any suggestions?
Since I’ve started wearing runners though it’s helped my heel.
Keep up the great work everyone :)
Day 28 here and can’t wait to start all over again with the heavier weights!
      YAY!!

  16. Teresa on August 9, 2011 at 9:56 am

30days =3lbs loss! I’ll take it…losing weight isn’t easy and eating right can be very challenging with parties and kids. I’m sure I could have done better but it’s a great start for me. :)

    • Lynda on August 9, 2011 at 10:04 am

      Teresa,
CONGRATS!!! I know how hard you’ve been working! Yay for you :)
