How to Use This Blog
If you’re new to the Shredheads blog and are interested in joining in all the fun (okay, it’s not really fun, but it will be when you fit into your pants!), then here’s a quick tour of the site:
30 Day Shred
You can purchase the 30 Day Shred DVD (which is a series of three workouts lasting just under 25 minutes) on Amazon.com. If you’ve got Comcast On Demand, it’s free, although I’m not sure if you can get all three levels. It’s also available for purchase at Exercisetv.tv.
I did the 30 Day Shred everyday for the entire month of March. Since the Shred is split into three levels, I did Level 1 for 10 days, Level 2 for 10 days, and Level 3 for 10 days. You don’t need anything but 3lb weights and a yoga mat (if you are working out on a hard surface). You should think about investing in a good sports bra, as well as new cross trainers. The Shred is tough on the knees and shins.
For gear suggestions and links, please check out the right side bar or our Amazon store.
There’s nothing to say that you can’t mix up the levels, or do it every other day. However, if you want to maximize your results, then you’ll want to do it everyday. Plus, it’s only 20 minutes.
Make sure to take your weight as well as your measurements before you start. And be brave – take a picture. There’s nothing like comparing a before and after!
Diet
I didn’t follow the 30 Day Shred diet plan. Basically, I stopped eating after 8pm, drank only water (with a few tasty beverages – ahem – each week), and just watched what I ate. No boxes of donuts or gallons of ice cream.
Bill Gookin, who is partnering with me on this blog, follows Weight Watchers.
Running
Both Bill and I started 5K training in May 2009 and continued on with 10K and half marathon training. If you’d like to get started, we suggest our “So you want to run a 5K” post series.

If you’re curious about our results, here’s what we looked like after 30 days of the 30 Day Shred.

Ive always been curious… Where do you find this 30 Day Shred diet plan? I know Jillian mentions it on the DVD, but I don’t see it on there anywhere. Not that I’d do it, but I’m curious.
Did you ever get this answer? I’m curious as well about the diet plan.
I’ve never seen the answer either…online or in the DVD packaging. She kind of mentions it once on the DVD, so I figure it was one of her old ones on her website. She’s got a current plan going, although I’m a Weight Watchers fan so I haven’t tried hers. Really, any sensible diet will go along well with Shred.
I never did get an answer. I’m gathering from her website message boards that she had a diet plan with the book “Making The Cut”, so I’m wondering if that’s what she’s referring to. I haven’t read the book, so I don’t know how similar if at all those exercises are to the 30 Day Shred.
I did notice in that discussion that that particular meal plan was obviously pre J’s research and learning about metabolism as there are apparently some processed foods in some of the MTC recipes that are verboten now with MYM.
I’m a mamber of her site right now, but I’m also now doing myfitnesspal.com – with the exception of not entering my exercise until I’m done eating because I don’t like knowing how many calories I “earned” because then I feel like I have to eat them.
My mom has completed the 30 Day shred and said to find the eating plan you need to load the DVD on a dvd-compatible computer.

I’ve never done a blog before – but I need motivation and want to do things “right” so I’m looking forward to being a part of this community. About 10 years ago I dropped 60 lbs and for the first time in my life really began to care about my health. However, over that 10 years life has gotten a little more crazy and I’ve ultimately gained back 20 of those lost pounds. I want them gone!! I love weight training, Pilates, and kickboxing – I hate running, dieting and boring workouts. After this post I am going to do Level 1 of the 30-Day Shred and hope to report back to you regularly with my progress … My goal is work-out 6 days a week, drop 17.5 pounds, and 16 body inches. Wish me luck, keep me encouraged … I’ll do the same for you! Here’s to a better tomorrow!

How To Fast Easy Health Weight Loss and good Ideas for Diet….
[...] go outside to run. instead, I stayed home and did my first day of Jillian Michaels’ 30 Day Shred (where I learned about it). I also did my first day of 100 Push Ups. It felt great, too. Even [...]
One night, I saw an infomercial for the Insanity workout. All that intensity looks awesome, but I knew if I purchased it on impulse, it would gather dust with “Yoga for Dummies,” “Zumba,” and “Winsor Pilates” on my shelf. So I made a deal with myself: if I could do an intense workout for 60 days straight, I could get the DVDs if I still thought I needed them.
So yesterday I was sitting on the couch after work (as usual) and all of a sudden I impulse-navigated to the “Sports and Fitness” menu on my Comcast OnDemand. I went to the first “Cardio” program I came to – which happened to be level 1 of the Jillian Michaels 30-day Shred.
Now, I’ll admit that I haven’t really watched “Biggest Loser” or any of Jillian’s shows, and only have limited knowledge of her from the gossip magazines and general pop-culture knowledge. I always sort of thought she was just another fitness joker.
This lady is no joke. She kicked my ass for 20 minutes, harder than I’ve had my ass kicked in a long time. I told everyone who would listen today that Jillian Michaels is the real deal. I was SORE today, but I kind of couldn’t wait to get home to do my workout. Then I was sort of dreading it, feeling the pain of every tiny movement. But as soon as I started, I felt great. It’s only 20 minutes! It works so well for my super-busy lifestyle!
Jillian is basically my hero, now. Not only has she given me exactly what I needed (a TWENTY minute workout that is effective!), but she also saved me $100 – because I know I won’t be needing that overpriced “Insanity” workout now!
So this was supposed to be day 7 for me on the 30 day shred video. Like everyone else, I almost died the first day, but I’ve been fine since then. I started the shred to do something besides running and elliptical routines in which I lost 20lbs in 3 months. I’m down to 145 but I have 15lbs more to go. So far, I’ve only felt myself getting bulkier which is fine, but I mainly just want inches to come off. I count calories religiously and do about 1,000 a day. I feel like I’ve plateaued and I need some help! Please give me some suggestions.
My first suggestion is to increase the calories by at least 200/day. If you’re consistently dropping below 1200 calories/day, your body goes into starvation mode and will hold onto whatever it can and stop burning fat. It sounds like that’s exactly what’s happening with you. Bump the calories to 1200.
I’ve also been told from numerous sources that it’s a good idea to have at least a day a week that’s even a bit higher in caloric intake to keep your metabolism on its toes.
I agree with Beth on all counts. 1000 calories seems too low, and an occasional bump day will help “confuse” your body and help keep pounds coming off.
Also, if you were already working out a lot (great job with the 20 pounds, btw!) Shred may not be enough exercise by itself…you may need to supplement it with a little time on the elliptical, running, or whatever. Just make sure you’re eating enough to keep your body going!

I really be keen on the subject matter to facilitate you shared. Thank you on behalf of relocation….
Okay….I’m on Day 17 of the 30 day Shred and I absolutely love it! I know….weird, huh! I have a question that I hope someone can answer. What do I do after the 30 days? Do I go back to Level 1? Do I stay on Level 3 and do it every other day? Please help!!!
Question: I bought 4 of her DVDs. Since I already teach Zumba 3 nights a week, I decided to do 30 Day Shred AND No More Trouble Zones and have been alternating them on days. Has anyone tried that? and gotten good results doing so?
I love mixing her DVDs in with running. Really, as long as you’re feeling like you’ve gotten a workout, I think you’re doing it right.
I have just bought 30 day shread from amazon I cant wait to get started the results look amazing.
i just got my 30 day shred and did my first workout today. I came across it after getting the no more trouble zone.
my question is do i have to do the “30 day” everyday?
the reason i got this is b/c i was running 3-4x a week and my weight loss has come to a halt. a really big halt and decided i wanted to something different. i first gave up on weight watchers (long story) and now on a calorie counting diet with myfitnesspal.
i want to do this however, i don’t want to give up running either. as a mom to a 2 yr old and with a husband that works 7 days a week for a few months i don’t have much time. can i do this every other day? if you guys were in my position how would you do this? i also didn’t feel the shred gave me as a good workout as no more trouble zones…
When Kristen and I did 30DS, we did all 30 days in a row, but we (at least I) were just starting to work out. Since it was the only thing I was doing, it was appropriate to only do it.
But if you’re already running, I’d probably just alternate days. Run MWF, shred TThSS, something like that. It’s nice to get the overall workout. As you mentioned, it doesn’t give as great a workout as No More Trouble Zones, but then again it is only half the length. If you have the time, NMTZ is going to be a better workout, but if you don’t…
Good luck!
hi bill,
i guess i’m trying to figure this all out. so i think i’m going to attempt to do this everyday during my sons nap time and skip a few days here and there only b/c of scheduling (one day with out of town friends, another to disneyland etc.) i also decided to do this AND run and maybe save the NMTZ for then end of the 30 days b/c there’s no way i can manage to do NMTZ and keep running. i don’t have the time or the stamina. today i am sore. REALLY sore. thanks for reading my ramble. as i mentioned i’m just trying to figure out how to fit this in. as the video claims, you won’t see result if you skip a day? really? i’m thinking of just skipping a day here and there and i won’t see results?
heu it’s me again!
one more thing- fun fact! one of the women in the video, Natalie used to be my kickboxing instructor at my old gym. I used to take her class regularly before i got married, got pregnant, had a baby, and got really fat. it was so awesome to see her in the video!
Hello there,
I purchased the 30 day shred roughly 2 weeks ago and have advance to level 3. I am roughly 5′3 174 lbs. I consider myself to have a lot of muscle, that being said though I carry all my weight in my hips and thighs. Prior to having my twins (almost 2years ago) I was 158 lbs and the happiest I had ever been. I used Jillian Michaels Ultimatum 2010 and it got me down to 164, I plateaued HUGE and then slowly over the last 6 month I have crept back up into the 170’s. In two weeks I haven’t really lost many lbs and I didn’t measure myself, I am thinking I might try to find my measuring tape and do so.
I turn 30 August 30 and would love nothing more than to be my pre-prego weight but I don’t know if 16 lbs in unrealistic in a month? At least losing 10 by then would make me happy!
I have pretty much been doing 30day Shred everyday since I bought it. I have cut a lot of my carbs out, although my biggest weakness is nighttime snacking, I am in need of a healthy, cheep yet delicious snack for nighttime, do they exist LOL!
For me it’s a personal thing, my husband thinks I’m beautiful etc. but after years (and yes I know I am not in high school anymore) of being teased as a child re: my weight, although I would give anything to be that weight again, and a horribly verbally/emotionally abusive boyfriend, I cannot seem to get the “fat girl” thoughts out of my head.
That being said, my original question I wanted to ask here was whether or not it would be okay to do the shred level 1 around lunch time (twins napping) and then level 3 once they go to bed (around 8 pm) or is that way too much to achieve my goal and finally rid myself of my “fat girl.” I have spent almost 30 years with her I don’t want to spend another 30.
HELP!?!?!
This is a really good workout. It’s geared a little more to advanced exercisers, but the choreography is fairly basic and you will definately feel this the next day. There are three workouts that combine toning and aerobics together which are about a half an hour each. This way, you’re burning fat and toning muscles at the same time. It’s a little challenging, but fun and effective.
Here is the URL for the ripped in 30 meal plan, should be the same.

I just started the workouts yesterday, and want to loose 14lbs to get back into my prebaby jeans…
I am currently in maintenance after completing all 4 phases of the ideal protein plan. I started doing the Shred dvd 10 days ago and after the first 5 days when I went in to be weighted I had gone up 5 lbs which shocked me. Over the next 5 days I have continued to go up. I haven’t increased my calories and am confused to why I would be gaining weight rather than losing weight. Has anyone else seen this results and if so about when did you see the scale start to go down?
